A man in a tailored suit raises his fist on a red carpet. Behind him, a Paramount logo. In front of him, photographers. That is what resistance costs in Hollywood. Nothing.
Javier Bardem wants the world to boycott Adidas. Not over anything Adidas made. Over who they put in an ad. His name is Shalev Biton. He is an Israeli veteran and he has one leg. He lost the other in May 2021, when an anti-tank missile fired out of Gaza hit his vehicle on the Israeli side of the border. He was the one who got hit. The campaign is called the Single Shoe Service. It exists so that people with one leg don't have to buy two shoes.
So that's the target. A man with one leg being sold one shoe.
Bardem said he had blood on his hands. About a man who was blown apart by the people Bardem is defending. Then he went back to the party, ate his dinner, and let the cameras do the rest.
Look at what he actually did. He picked a cripple. He picked the safest target in the building, the one nobody in that room would ever defend, and he called it courage. Nobody booed. No agent called. No role disappeared. He risked nothing and he knew it before he put his little scarf on.
Ask him to boycott China, where his industry rewrites its own films to get a release. Ask him about the Gulf money funding the festivals he walks. The fist drops in a second.
Then Adidas bent the neck. A company worth billions looked at an amputee in its own campaign, looked at the noise online, and picked the noise. Headquarters distanced itself from its own work and apologized for any offense caused. They threw a one-legged man under the bus to get through a weekend. WTF!?
Adidas doesn't have values. It has a volume meter. Whoever screams loudest owns the brand that week, and the rest of us get to watch a German company decide, again, which people are inconvenient to be seen with.
