Denmark's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen repeats it like a mantra. Greenland is part of the Kingdom, sovereignty remains intact. Formally, that's true. But she's leaving out the rest.
According to the White House, the US now has veto power over strategic investments in Greenland from countries it considers adversaries. A senior US official adds that the US can build new bases as needed.
Copenhagen and Nuuk insist sovereignty is intact. But sovereignty is about who makes the decisions. When another country can veto who invests in your land and build bases without asking first, you no longer decide alone. The keys are hanging somewhere else now.
So why doesn't she say it out loud? Because she can't. The entire Danish political class spent months whipping up a mood. Trump was cast as the enemy, the US as the threat, and the fear was milked for everything it was worth in the run-up to the election. The media played along, and large parts of the population followed like puppets without asking a single question. Emotion beat reason again.
Here's what the people ruled by their feelings missed. The White House never intended to invade an ally. The tariff threats, the talk of force, the offers to buy Greenland were leverage. Trump wrote the book on this decades ago, and anyone who looks for patterns instead of headlines could see where it was heading. You open with maximum pressure, you let the other side panic, and you close on the terms you wanted from the start. Look at what Washington walked away with: permanent basing rights, the freedom to build more, and a veto over who invests in the island. That was the goal all along.
And there's a reason for the hard hand. This administration is working to pull the West out of woke hell and away from the ideologues who spent decades hollowing out its foundations. You don't win that fight with kid gloves. You play the game it takes to win.
Now the same prime minister has to explain that she signed off on what she called unacceptable. So she talks about sovereignty and hopes nobody reads the fine print.
And to everyone outside Denmark: don't be fooled by the sudden love for Greenland.
Denmark hasn't given a flying f*ck about Greenlanders for generations. They were only mentioned when the topic was drinking and social problems. In the '60s and '70s, thousands of Greenlandic girls and women had IUDs inserted without consent. Children were taken from their families to be turned into little Danes. The concern that suddenly blossomed this year was about ownership. Greenlanders themselves were an afterthought.
Greenland is still Denmark's on paper. That's the only place Denmark ever cared about it.
