Michigan has elected Abdul El-Sayed to the U.S. Senate, and he becomes the first Muslim ever to serve in it. The AP has called the race. His campaign carried heavy baggage. He is accused of ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, which he denies. His critics point to a mosque he reportedly attends, where an imam praised a Hamas leader as a martyr, to his claim that banning sharia is white supremacy, to his comparison of sharia with Catholic canon law, to his statement that he feels religiously obligated to follow sharia-compliant practices, and to his ties to Nation of Islam figures.
