CULTURAL CHRISTIANITY IS A WEAKNESS
Cultural Christian. It sounds nice. It sounds like someone who is still holding on. But in reality it is a sign of weakness.
You want the culture. Christmas, the churches, the hymns, the whole heritage we stand on and live off. But you will not own the One who created it. You take the fruit and deny the root. You want the gift, but you will not acknowledge the giver.
It is like moving into a house, eating at the table and sleeping safely under the roof, and then denying there was ever a builder. You enjoy everything another has raised, and convince yourself it simply grew up on its own. And houses like that, no one guards them. Why would you fight for something you believe came from nothing?
It is no accident that we have ended up here.
Since the Second World War we built up human rights and took God out of the equation. We wanted the values without the source. And the further down that track we go, the more we slide into the idea that values are simply something that exist. Not something that must be cultivated, defended and passed on.
We believe freedom takes care of itself. That the good culture stays standing, no matter what we believe, or do not believe.
That belief is dangerous. Because a culture that does not know where it came from cannot defend where it is going.
Then we slide into cultural Christianity. And from there it is a short step to technocracy. And technocracy slides easily into socialism, communism, Marxism. It ends in the custodian state, where you are no longer a human being with a soul, but a resource. A piece in a great state machine.
Because when God is taken out, man sits himself in the chair. And then the state becomes God. We do not have to guess where that leads. We have seen it.
The two most complete attempts the world has made to remove God from the equation were China and Russia. There they hunted and slaughtered the people who insisted on believing.
They tore history down because they wanted to build a new human being from scratch. Those experiments ended with more than 100 million dead. Not in war. Killed by their own state, in peacetime, because the state had made itself the highest authority over life and death.
And now the same thing is happening in the Western world. Only wrapped up more nicely.
The technocracy in the EU wants the human being as a resource, whose only purpose is to fit into the state. Instead of the human being as end, meaning and purpose in itself, created in God’s image with freedom and responsibility.
They take your freedom and call it safety. They take your responsibility and call it care. All for your own security, they say. But a person who has his responsibility taken from him is not protected. He is stripped of his standing.
And here cultural Christianity fails completely.
It has no strength to stand against either technocracy or Islam. Because it does not know why it believes. It will not take ownership of its own root. Islam knows what it believes, and why. The technocrat knows what he wants, and why.
But cultural Christianity stands with its hands in its pockets, hoping it will all stay standing on its own. It will not.
A faith that dares not own its own root cannot defend anything at all. It has already half surrendered.
Look at the numbers. In Western Europe around 64 percent call themselves Christian. But few of them actually believe in God. The non-practicing, the cultural Christians, are the largest group of all. They are almost twice as many as those who truly believe. They keep the name and a vague sense of something greater, but let go of God.
Let that sink in. The majority of the West’s Christians carry the name, but have let go of the content.
This matters for our continued freedom. Because freedom does not rest on a name. It rests on a conviction strong enough to defend itself. As long as cultural Christians stand there with their hands in their pockets, the West stands weak and unsteady before those who know exactly what they want.
I do not want the culture alone. I want the God who gave it to us. I want to own the root, not just pick the fruit.
So this is a call. To you who carry the name. Take a stand, take ownership, take God back into it. Wake up. Or we end up as the very thing we did not want to be, and you will not like the ones who make the choice for you.
