The difference between the old agreement and the new one.
The 1951 agreement was tied to NATO. It stayed in force only as long as the NATO treaty did, and it rested on Greenland remaining part of the Danish Realm. The new agreement has no end date, can only be changed by mutual consent, and carries over if Greenland becomes independent.
That is the real gain for the US. America's biggest long-term risk was an independent Greenland with major financing needs opening the door to Chinese money. That door is now closed, militarily through the NATO requirement and economically through investment screening.
A major change in how secure the US position will be 30 to 50 years from now.
And that also means no China or Russia.
