The Iranian people are getting closer to the freedom they have been fighting for.
Whatever your politics, two names are impossible to leave out of what has happened to Iran's regime in 2026:
Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu.
Washington has squeezed the regime economically, and together with Israel it has struck its military and security infrastructure.
Now look inside Iran. Strikes. Oil workers and nurses protesting. A regime bracing its security forces for more unrest.
Something is moving.
Now let's talk about Europe.
While Iranians were risking everything, every government in Europe had a choice.
You could stand unapologetically with the Iranian people. You could isolate the regime and shut down its diplomatic presence.
Or you could do what Europe does so incredibly well:
Issue statements. Express "deep concern." Call for restraint. And make certain nobody at the meeting gets uncomfortable.
Yes, Europe imposed sanctions and condemned the repression.
But when history demanded courage, was that enough?
Because if Iran becomes free, European politicians will line up in front of the cameras to congratulate the Iranian people and tell us they always stood with them.
And some of us will remember.
Who spoke when speaking carried a price. Who stood with the Iranian people before everyone knew how the story ended. And who suddenly discovered their courage afterward.
And while we're at it, the same goes for Israel.
The regime Iranians are fighting is the same regime that has funded and armed Hamas. Yet Europe has sent money into Gaza that far too often ended up in the hands of Hamas. And far too few European leaders speak up for Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East, and for the Jewish people's right to defend themselves.
You don't get to rewrite your part when the battle is over.
History keeps receipts.
