Many people don’t like you when you don’t share their opinion about Trump.
Especially Danish men when it comes to Greenland.
Some are apparently so emotionally invested that disagreement is no longer enough. They have to make it personal. Insults in the comment section. Personal messages in my inbox. Like this one.
I don’t take it personally. I think it’s sad.
Imagine being a grown man and sitting behind your screen writing “what a dumb blond Trump fuck you are” to a woman in her private inbox…simply because she holds a political opinion you disagree with.
Imagine being married to a man who behaves like that toward women he doesn’t even know.
And there are plenty of them. Men who apparently lose all self-control the moment somebody challenges their worldview. Men who, at the same time, would probably tell you they are the strong men who are supposed to defend our country and our civilization.
Strength isn’t losing control because a woman disagrees with you.
Now, let me be very clear about Greenland.
My view that a stronger American security and military role in Greenland can serve a larger strategic purpose is about far more than Trump, Denmark or Greenland in isolation.
I am capable of looking beyond the borders of my own country when the security of the Western world is at stake.
The Arctic has become strategically crucial. Russia and China are major geopolitical players there, and even NATO’s Secretary General has explicitly pointed to the risk of increased Russian and Chinese access to the Arctic.
Denmark and Greenland cannot carry the security burden of the Arctic alone. Nor, in fact, is that the current strategy. NATO has increased its Arctic role, Denmark has expanded its military activity there, and the United States already has a longstanding military presence in Greenland under the 1951 defence agreement.
And just this week, Denmark, Greenland and the United States announced that they expect to sign a new agreement strengthening security in the Arctic and North Atlantic…while explicitly recognizing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
So yes. I believe a strong United States, closely allied with us and heavily engaged in Arctic security, is crucial to the security of the Western world.
I have far less faith in a Europe that outsources its security while pretending political declarations are a substitute for hard power.
You are completely free to disagree with me. That is what free societies are supposed to allow.
But when your response to a political disagreement is to enter a woman’s private inbox and call her a “dumb blond Trump fuck,” you haven’t defeated her argument.
You’ve simply shown everyone what you become when someone refuses to think like you.
